Caravan Park Sewage Treatment

Moreton Bay Regional Council awarded True Water the contract for the design and construction of the Toorbul Caravan Park Sewage Treatment System. The popular tourist destination is located within 100 meters of Pumicestone Passage and next to RAMSAR-listed wetlands. At high tide, Pumicestone Passage connects with a lagoon that borders the caravan park. The old, failing septic system was discharging only metres away.

The entire site drains into these sensitive saltwater waterways, which flow directly into Moreton Bay. Therefore, a new wastewater management system was needed to replace the failing septic system. The council’s main concern was the site’s environmental sensitivity. After a thorough tender and evaluation process, the council chose True Water to provide an environmentally friendly sewage treatment system for the caravan park.

The new sewage treatment system had to address several environmental factors. These included the nearby sensitive wetlands and waterways, aging infrastructure that allowed stormwater to ingress to the the capture network, and the limited space available for the new system.

True Water decommissioned the old treatment plant and repaired the capture network to stop stormwater infiltration. We delivered and installed a 20kL Kubota HCZ Sewage Treatment Plant, which discharges through an engineered effluent management zone. This method reduced the space needed for effluent dispersal and allowed for environmental buffers. True Water also added a comprehensive revegetation program to the system design. This involved using native species to restore the damaged wetlands and reestablish habitat both within and bordering the site.
